Former Ohio State Commit Zahir Mathis Chooses Maryland on National Signing Day
Four-star EDGE rusher Zahir Mathis has officially committed to the Maryland Terrapins, switching his pledge from Ohio State during National Signing Day. Mathis, who initially committed to the Buckeyes in January 2024, had a change of heart and explored other options before settling on Maryland.
The 6-foot-5.5, 230-pound standout from Philadelphia’s Imhotep Institute was highly sought after, receiving offers from top programs nationwide. Ranked as the No. 4 player in Pennsylvania, the No. 16 EDGE rusher, and the No. 170 overall prospect in the 2025 class by On3, Mathis brings size, athleticism, and quickness to Maryland’s defensive front.
After decommitting from Ohio State in November, Mathis took official visits to UCLA, Florida State, and Maryland. Ultimately, he chose the Terrapins, where head coach Mike Locksley and defensive coordinator Brian Williams are looking to revamp a struggling pass rush. Maryland’s defense finished the 2024 season with just 14 total sacks, ranking near the bottom of the FBS.
Mathis turned heads at the Under Armour All-America Game, where he showcased his talent with three tackles, a quarterback hurry, and a pass breakup against some of the nation’s top prospects. He capped off his senior season with 34 total tackles, including three for loss, and three sacks. His addition makes him the highest-rated defensive lineman in Maryland’s 2025 recruiting class, which ranks 32nd nationally and 10th in the Big Ten.
Maryland fans can expect to see Mathis in action when the Terrapins kick off their 2025 season at home against Florida Atlantic on August 30. His presence could be a game-changer for a defense in need of a strong pass rusher.
