How Jim Knowles left for Penn State as a result of Ryan Day’s “interference.”

It appears that tension between Ohio State’s head coach, Ryan Day, and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles played a significant role in Knowles’ departure from the Buckeyes. According to sources close to the program, there were growing concerns over Day’s level of interference in defensive strategy, which led to friction between the two coaches.

Knowles, who had been brought in from Oklahoma State in 2022 to improve Ohio State’s defense, initially brought energy and fresh ideas to the unit. However, sources indicated that Day’s increasing involvement in defensive playcalling and decision-making began to undermine Knowles’ authority and vision for the defense. As a head coach known for his offensive prowess, Day has always maintained a strong influence over the team’s overall direction. But his close involvement in the defensive side of the ball seemed to clash with Knowles’ desire to implement his own system.

Rumors suggest that Day’s input on game plans, along with a difference in philosophy over defensive tactics, caused Knowles to feel sidelined. Ultimately, this interference, combined with growing frustrations over the lack of autonomy, led to Knowles seeking new opportunities. In early 2025, Jim Knowles made the decision to accept an offer to become Penn State’s defensive coordinator. His move to Penn State was seen as a chance to regain control over a defense and rebuild his reputation without the constant interference that had hampered his efforts at Ohio State.
