What’s next for the Yankees after losing out on Sasaki?
MLB analyst Bryan Jaeger of Call to The Pen has suggested that the New York Yankees should make a move to sign two-time All-Star Alex Bregman.
After missing out on acquiring standout pitcher Roki Sasaki, Jaeger believes the Yankees need to make a significant impact in the offseason. One potential solution is bolstering the infield by adding a player like Bregman, as the team requires reinforcement at either second or third base, depending on where Jazz Chisholm Jr. will ultimately play.
“Bregman fills a lot of gaps for the Yankees,” Jaeger wrote. “It’s surprising he’s still available. He could take over at third base and allow Chisholm to move back to his more natural position at second base. Plus, Bregman would represent the big-name acquisition fans are waiting for, assuming they can overlook his history with a rival team.”
Bregman, who has spent his entire nine-year career with the Houston Astros, posted a .260 batting average, a .315 on-base percentage, and a .453 slugging percentage last season, along with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs.
Chisholm, an All-Star second baseman in 2022 with the Miami Marlins, hit .256 with 24 home runs and 73 RBIs last season. While the Yankees moved him to third base after acquiring him at the trade deadline, Statcast recorded eight outs above average in his 45 games there. However, many believe Chisholm is more comfortable at second base, where he played from 2020 to 2022.
