Since his exit from Kaizer Chiefs, Bafana Bafana international defender Siyabonga Ngezana has been a key player for the Romanian champions FCSB.

In the concluded 2023/24 season, the 27-year-old helped his team win their first league title after nine years. The Romanian heavyweights further won the Super Cup which was – prior to the start of the campaign, a seemingly unachievable target.

FCSB exploits put them in the Uefa Champions League, but they dropped to the Europa League where they have been doing quite well in the League Phase, hoping to get into the knockout stage.

Ngezana’s efforts have not gone down in vain. Sports publication Fanatik has named him the Defender of the Year.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity, it seems like my Christmas present came early,” the center-back said after the triumph.

“It’s very important before I leave the stage to mention the people who played a huge role in my career; first of all, I just want to say thank you God for the opportunity to stand before you.

“I thank my family for giving me an opportunity to come in Romania to come and express my talent, and to mention the chairman Mr Gigi Becali.”

Ngezana played a crucial role in helping Bafana Bafana seal their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations that will be hosted in Morocco. He is expected to make the squad that will represent South Africa in the biennial competition.

Prior to that, Ngezana might be part of the Bafana squad that will take part in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers that resume in March.
