Bayern Munich has made it clear that Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is their top transfer target for the upcoming summer window. Alongside efforts to secure a contract extension for Jamal Musiala, the club is prepared to deviate from its usual financial restraint and make a substantial investment to acquire the German playmaker from Die Werkself. In short, Bayern is willing to break the bank to sign Wirtz.
According to Sport Bild’s Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern is increasingly optimistic about closing a deal for Wirtz, despite Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro setting a €150 million price tag on the player. This comes even as Bayern has been restructuring its squad wages and offloading high-earning players in recent transfer windows.
It’s worth noting that Carro played a pivotal role in derailing Jonathan Tah’s potential move to Bayern last summer. Carro publicly criticized Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl, which Tah’s agent claimed complicated negotiations. Although Tah was a priority for Vincent Kompany, Bayern ultimately signed Hiroki Ito as their only defensive reinforcement during that transfer window.
The prospect of seeing Wirtz and Musiala play together at Bayern, given their effective partnership in the German national team, has generated significant excitement. While the positive progress in Musiala’s contract talks could serve as an added incentive for Wirtz to join, it is not the sole factor driving Bayern’s pursuit of the Leverkusen star.
