Cael Sanderson Named NWCA Coach of the Year for Record-Breaking Seventh Time
University Park, PA – Penn State’s Cael Sanderson has been named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Coach of the Year for a record-breaking seventh time.
Sanderson, who has led the Nittany Lions to nine NCAA team titles since 2011, received the award after guiding Penn State to its latest championship in 2023.
Under Sanderson’s leadership, Penn State has become the dominant program in college wrestling, winning 10 conference championships and producing numerous individual national champions.
“Cael Sanderson is the epitome of excellence in coaching,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “His dedication, expertise, and passion for the sport are unmatched.”
Sanderson, a four-time NCAA champion wrestler himself, has been coaching at Penn State since 2009. He has been named the NWCA Coach of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019, and now 2023.
“It’s an honor to receive this award,” Sanderson said. “But I’m just one part of a great team. I’m proud of our wrestlers, coaches, and support staff for their hard work and commitment to excellence.”
